The learning begins before the candle is even lit with discussions around some specific safety issues. We talk about holding a burn under running cold water for 10 minutes, why the bucket of water is under the table, and of course where we go to assemble in case of an emergency such as a dangerous fire. We do this activity so often that our older children are able to share their knowledge with the newer or younger tamariki fluently.
We are all aware that a burning candle dripping wax over paper is potentially risky, so therefore we concentrate and remain focused for the entire duration of this activity.
The science of dripping wax and then painting dye over the top is a great way to teach young children scientific concepts and provide opportunities for thinking and reasoning.
