Matariki celebrations are an annual event at Central Kids Kihikihi Kindergarten where we welcome and embrace the Māori New Year.
The children have been nurturing Papatūānuku by digging bokashi into our gardens. This enables our gardens to receive nutritious fertiliser created from food scraps at kindergarten. We continue to be guided by Maramataka, the lunar calendar for the planting and harvesting of our sustainable gardens.
Our environment has been adorned with sparkling lights highlighting our Matariki stars and a pop up dark house creates an atmosphere of night time luminous wonder for the children.
On the 2nd July, Te Reo Singalong author, Sharon Holt along with her husband Alan captivated children, whānau and teachers with their Matariki singalong show. Familiar with the Te Reo Singalong books and Matariki waiata, the children demonstrated confidence and delight while being actively involved in the show.
Flax weaving has been an integral part of our programme and children have enjoyed building skills and confidence while creating an intricate flax star alongside learning tikanga associated with this traditional art form.
The beautiful aroma of star cookies being baked has filled our kindergarten as the children prepare delicious kai in anticipation for our kākari.
Special visitor Pana, Pia’s Nan joined us on the 24th July to share her wisdom and knowledge around working with flax. Children had the opportunity to ask questions and enjoyed engaging in further exploration of harakeke.
We invited all whānau to join us for a hākari on the 24th July, where we came together to listen to a Matariki story and enjoyed a shared lunch. The children were treated to hot chips kindly donated by local business ‘Willy’s Takeaways’. This was a truly wonderful time to gather together to celebrate Matariki, to connect and look forward to new beginnings.
