Thursday night was cold, dark and rainy, not the best weather for a night out!
However, despite the weather, our whānau arrived at Owhata to find the kindergarten decorated with sparkly lights, glow in the dark lamps and lots of kai tables!
Whaea Moepera gave a short kōrero about the Owhata Uara – our values. Then after karakia kai it was time to eat. Each whānau had brought a plate of food to share, so we had such a variety of different kai… te reka… Yum!
It was really special to be able to eat some huawhenua from our own māra kai, our kūmara, broccoli, silver beet and a salad as well!
When our puku were full, our whānau spend some time adding their thoughts to our Uara and putting a star on our Matariki tree to send a message to someone who had passed or to share their hopes and dreams for the coming year.
A big thanks to our families and whānau for sharing this special night with us.
Ma te wheturangi o Matariki, e tiaki mai, e manaaki mai i a koe, i a koutou ranei, mo te tau e taka mai ana.
Let the gentle light of Matariki guide and inspire you all this new year.
