Over the summer the tamariki at Central Kids Owhata have been busy in the māra kai.
We started off by planting seeds, using the green house to help our plants grow stronger.
Then we were able to plant our tomatoes, silver beet, spring onions, kūmara, capsicum and sweet corn into our māra kai.
Our tamariki enjoy being in the garden helping to plant, water and take care of all our plants. They are learning to take care of Papatūānuku and know that she will provide yummy kai for us in return.
The most exciting part of growing vegetables, is when you get to harvest them. Our tamariki are learning when it is time to pick the ripe vegetables. This is an awesome way to share and provide healthy vegetables for our whānau to enjoy here at kindergarten and at home. We are now in the process of picking our tomatoes and looking at preserving some to last us into the cooler seasons.
