At Central Kids Edgecumbe, play is a key aspect of their tamariki’s learning. Here is a story that Head Teacher Emma wrote about Central Kids Edgecumbe pupil Kaiya.
Kaiya, you had an absolute blast today in the mud pit! You were so content in your own play – you even used the cones to block the entrance so that you wouldn’t be disturbed.
After a long time I heard the now familiar call of ‘Hey, Hey’, so I came over to see what you were up to.
You were beaming with happiness as you showed me that you had been cooking – Chocolate Caramels, delicious.
You didn’t offer me one though Kaiya, they were all for you and fair enough, you had taken so much care making them
It was lovely to see you engaged in your play for so long today Kaiya, it is a great skill to learn to be content in your own company and to follow your own interests rather than having to follow the crowd.
Next time I just hope that maybe you will make me a Chocolate Caramel, they sure looked tempting.
