We were so excited when Greenscape turned up to make our garden boxes. We all watched in anticipation as they got busy with their tools. They looked fantastic when completed and really gave that area of our garden a face lift.
We then had a discussion about what vegetables or fruit we could plant. Some suggestions were avocados, tomatoes, salad, cucumbers, oranges and cheese! Because of the season our choices were limited.
However, on a spontaneous walk to the local plant centre, the tamariki chose spring onions, a rainbow selection of silverbeet, cauliflower and beetroot. The tamariki loved being a part of the decision making and contributing to planting the vegetables, as well as planting some carrot seeds. One garden box remains unplanted for new season vegetables.
Greenscape also make our new compost bins around the same time. We now have begun to compost our food scraps and paper towels. Once composted, they will be returned to Papatūānuku in all the gardens we have, contributing to our sustainability and Parakore journey.
