Central Kids Kihikihi Kindergarten regularly participates in Dalton’s Sunflowers in Kindergartens Project. This time we decided to brighten the gardens of all our whānau by sending the sunflowers home. In August last year every child potted their own sunflower seed, once the seedlings were ready they headed off home. As you can see our tamariki had some amazing results growing the seedlings in their own gardens with the help of their whānau.
Kihikihi Kindergarten children spend time not only in their own gardens but also in the flower and vegetable gardens here at the kindergarten. We planted some giant sunflower seeds in one of these gardens and fed them with our ‘Bokashi tea’; we loved watching them grow! Our tamariki take ownership of ensuring any lunchtime leftovers make it in the bokashi bin and away from landfill. It was wonderful for them to see the positive impact the bi-product of their lunch waste can have on helping plants grow.
Our tamariki have learnt valuable gardening skills that will hopefully see them have a love for gardening life.
