Children at Central Kids Kihikihi Kindergarten have been intrigued and excited as they watched the ‘Dalton’s Sunflowers in Kindergartens’ plants grow… from tiny shoots to tall plants with thick stems and leaves and then beautiful yellow flower heads – the transformation has been amazing!
With Autumn arriving it’s time to harvest the seeds. Being an Enviroschools Kindergarten, we value the concept of collecting seeds to reuse again in the future. After giving nature time to enjoy the nutritional value of these seeds it was time to pull out the plants and shuck the seeds.
Hundreds of seeds were collected and now they are resting in the fridge until Spring approaches and they can be planted once again.
Viewing the life cycle of the sunflower in action provides many learning opportunities for our tamariki and is a fun way to learn about scientific concepts. Harvesting seeds may become a tradition at Kihikihi Kindergarten.
