At kindergarten, our tamariki have been busy changing our lower sandpit into a river to reflect our local rivers here in Ōpōtiki, Otara River to our East and Waioweka River on the West.
We have replanted pingao and flax which our tamariki found from around kindergarten within this space to create a more natural reflection of our awa. We have a saying here at Central Kids Ōpōtiki “Ko au te awa, ko te awa ko au. I am the river and the river is me” this shows our connectedness to our environment and how important our river is to us as a whānau of Te Whakatohea.
Throughout this experience, children would come and go as and when their interest led them to our awa hou. The learning through play involves lots of conversations, sharing of ideas and skills all initiated and driven by our tamariki and supported by teachers who love to learn and share alongside each other.
