Poipoia te kākano kia puawai – Nurture the seed and it will blossom
Kōanga (spring) is in the air and the tamariki at Central Kids Rewi Street Kindergarten are preparing ngā māra (the gardens) for planting. Propagation trays have been filled with soil. Vegetable and herb seeds have been carefully placed in finger holes and watered. They have been checked each day to see when the first shoots will appear. Tamariki especially enjoyed squishing a mixture of clay, seeds and potting mix between their fingers and rolling them into balls to make seed bombs to throw into the wild garden. These contain a mixture of wild flowers to attract ngā purerehūa me pī (butterflies and bees). One whānau brought in some sunflower seeds harvested from their flowers last season and the tamariki have planted these. We are expecting to have a fantastic harvest this raumati (summer)!
