Mānawatia a Matariki

Mānawatia a Matariki

We have been learning about Matariki at Central Kids Helen Downer. We decided to capture our knowledge through an art display. We also made a korowai, by weaving all of our individual feathers together.

We know that Matariki is a cluster of 9 stars known as Pleiades. We have been practising pronouncing the names of each star, and learning about their significance. Matariki is the beginning of the Māori New Year and appears just before Winter.

Matariki is a time of reflection, it is the coming together of families. Matariki is about remembering those who have passed, it is the ideal time to plan for the upcoming year. Matariki is also a great time to give back to Papatūānuku, our Earth Mother.
