Māra kai at David Henry Kindergarten

Māra kai at David Henry Kindergarten

From the beginning ngā tamariki wanted to be involved with preparing the māra kai, vegetable garden.

We had some new garden boxes purchased which we filled with pumice sand and special MyNoke compost-dirt.

Ngā tamariki discussed which seeds they wanted to plant from the packets we had and chose long radishes, round radishes, chives, peas, silverbeet and spaghetti squash. Part of our discussion was “What vegetables do you like to eat?” and there was a chorus from ngā tamariki of “I don’t like vegetables”, so we shall have to see whether they change their minds when they taste the produce they are growing!

Then we prepared some seed trays to start off our own seedlings to water and watch them sprout bigger and bigger with each day.  Look at our progress!!
