We are in the beginning stages of creating a māra kai, a community garden.
Growing healthy kai with and four tamariki and whānau is one way that we can practice kaitiakitanga of our kindergarten whenua. It is a long term sustainable solution to ensuring that everyone has access to fresh fruit and vegetables. This māra is for everyone! Together we will tend to the garden and enjoy the spoils from it. It is a garden of empowerment and a garden of togetherness.
Tamariki have been involved right from the beginning. They have been busy moving soil, planting vegetables and watering the garden. They have also been bush moving soil, planting vegetables and watering the garden. They have also been busy creating reflection barriers and painting White Butterfly decoys to scare away the real ones that have been flying around. We have researched White Butterflies and have discovered that they are territorial, so hopefully this will help keep them away!
There has been some amazing collaborating and sharing of ideas going on among tamariki as they have become more and more engaged in the hands on, interactive learning that is happening in our māra kai.
