At Central Kids Kihikihi, we are always looking out for ways to reduce and recycle. Kaiako and tamariki started thinking about all our unnamed paintings and drawings and thought about making paper bricks. Recycling and recreating through the process of taking materials ready to be thrown away and converting them into reusable materials – like our paper bricks, involves tamariki working together, using new skills and thinking about bigger issues such as recycling and the world around them.
Seeing the paper turn to mash when the water is added, then once pressed, dry back into a brick provides valuable learning opportunities and at the end of the process, we have a paper brick, ready to sell. It’s such a fun activity for the children to be involved in and it’s an excellent example of recycling in action.
