On behalf of Central Kids Charles & Glenshea Kindergartens in Putaruru, we would like to sincerely thank Trust Waikato for their grant of $5,000 to support our māra kai kaupapa at Pikitu Marae.
With this support, we have been able to create gardens in which the kai that is grown helps the marae and kindergarten whānau.
Gardening tools for adults and tamariki, wet weather gear, gumboots, plants, grow tunnels, a water tank, hoses, frost cloth, stakes as well as raised garden beds have been purchased. This has created an amazing community atmosphere between the kindergartens and the marae.
Sustainable initiatives from Pikitu Marae have used the harvested kai to make preserves, rongoa and feed manuhiri. This sense of awareness from seed/seedling to kai has allowed mātauranga to grow and a strengthened sense of whakawhanaungatanga to blossom.
The sense of belonging that we all share now at Pikitu connects children to te ao Māori, allowing them to build awareness and knowledge about tikanga, kawa and the use of te reo Māori in an authentic environment.
