Wow, our sunflowers at Central Kids Ōtorohanga were growing 5cm a day through the later stages. Over the Christmas holidays, they continued to grow tall. Some of the shorter flowers grew even taller than the one we had measured for the Dalton’s Sunflowers for Kindergartens competition.
The flower heads grew bigger and bigger over the holidays too and by the time we got back to kindergarten, they had finished flowering and have now begun to droop. We are waiting for them to dry out so we can use them as birdfeeders.
Growing the sunflowers has been awesome team mahi. The tamariki have enjoyed watching them, caring for them and measuring the growth. Our tallest one we measured for the competition at the time was 2.95 metres! We wondered if it would reach the 3 metre mark. And we’re pretty sure it did! Everyone, whānau included have been amazed at the height they have got to. It has been an amazing learning experience for us all.
