Recently we had a very special day at Central Kids Homedale Kindergarten…. This was the day that we had the unveiling of our super special mural of “Māui and the Sun”! The artist, David Wall was there with his wife Moepera and daughter Bella-Aroha, which was very special!
We invited all our whānau to come and join us for the celebration and we also invited the Travelling Tuatara’s to come along for a story celebration adventure of “How Māui Slowed the Sun”. There was a great sense of anticipation and excitement as the kaiako set up whāriki on our grass area and we waited for the big reveal of the mural which was covered over with a large red cloth.
What a joyful occasion this was for all of us! We started the ceremony with a Karakia, a Blessing and a Waiata, after all that, the tamariki all used their bucket drums to do a drum-roll as David pulled the cloth down from the mural – Wow, how amazing! What a moment that was!
The tamariki, kaiako and whānau were impressed with the mural that was created especially for us. David had a little kōrero about the significance of this pakowaitara and where his inspiration had come from. He also told us and showed us some of the special three dimensional features of the mural, such as; the hook made from real bone, the woven ropes and the tiny pieces of greenstone that anchor the ropes to the ground.
What an awesome morning it was at Central Kids Homedale and what a special taonga/treasure for us at our kindergarten. Ngā mihi nui David for your awesome mahi… Ka mau te wehi!
