Over the last couple of weeks, a Nan of one of our tamariki has been coming in and pruning our harakeke and then she sits down with the tamariki and weaves. The tamariki that are interested will watch, ask questions about what she is doing and with the support for our tamariki to have a go at weaving. During the morning, most of our tamariki came over to see what Nan was doing. Each child that wanted, was given a rose.
This learning supports Te Whatu Pōkeko – Kaupapa Māori assessment where our tamariki learn by ways of knowing – this is a time of growth when the child is learning new ideas. Ways of doing – where we are teaching tamariki within a Māori context that is based on whanaungatanga and tikanga Māori.
