Starting at kindergarten is a huge change in the day to day routine of your tamaiti, and it is normal for them to feel a range of emotions during this time.
Often they don’t understand what they are feeling, and may be unable to tell us.
Parents or caregivers may also find it difficult or emotional during the transition period.
We want to make this transition as easy as possible for you and your tamaiti.
Top tips
- We encourage as many visits as you want with your tamaiti, before their start date. This allows them to become familiar with their new environment and the kaiako who will care for them. You will not be charged for these visits.
- During visits, please spend time with our kaiako and talk to them about your tamaiti. Make sure to share anything special you feel they should know. This helps them get to know your tamaiti and form a relationship with them.
- You are welcome to participate and join in on play using our toys and equipment. This gives your tamaiti clear signals that our service is a fun place to be.
- You are welcome to provide comforting objects for your tamaiti to have throughout the day, such as soft toys, blankets, mum’s scarf, or photos.
- It may be a little difficult the first time you leave your tamaiti with us. In our experience, tamariki respond best when you leave them happy, with a simple goodbye such as:
“I’m off now. I’ll be back later and you can tell me about all the wonderful things you have done today.”
Then leave promptly, as long drawn out goodbyes can be hard for everyone.
- Never sneak out while your tamaiti isn’t looking, as this can damage their trust in you and make them more upset the next day.
- You are welcome to give us a call at any time for an update on their wellbeing.
